Robots to Fight Loneliness

I The number of old people in the world is increasing. Many old people feel lonely. Loneliness can cause poor physical and mental health. Although psychological therapy can help with loneliness, some old people do not have enough money to pay a psychologist, and some cannot leave their homes to go meet with a psychologist.

II To help solve the problem of loneliness among old people, an Israeli company, Intuition Robotics, has invented a social robot called ElliQ. ElliQ is a small robot that sits on a table in the old person’s house. The robot can talk to the old person, play music, make phone calls or video calls, play word games, and remind the person to take medicine or go to the doctor. When the robot talks to the old person, it lights up and turns its head around to “look” at the person. This makes the person feel like the robot is “alive.” The old person interacts with the robot by talking to it or by pushing buttons on a touch screen.

III ElliQ is a robot that can learn. Over time, ElliQ learns all about the old person’s behavior, habits, interests, and personality. The robot uses this information to help the person. For example, the robot can detect if the person is behaving strangely and can call for medical help. If it sees that the person is sad or lonely, it can decide to start a conversation or call a family member.

IV The ElliQ robot is cheap, but there are still old people who cannot pay for it. Therefore, aid organizations in New York decided to give out robots to old people for free. They teach the people how to operate the robot and give them technical support at home if the robot stops working. ElliQ may not be suitable for people who want quiet and privacy in their homes. But for many old people, ElliQ is a very useful way to fight the negative results of loneliness.

The Amazon Rainforest

I The Amazon rainforest is the biggest rainforest in the world. It covers 6.7 million km², which is twice as big as India. 60% of the Amazon rainforest is in Brazil. In the 1960s, trees in the rainforest started to be cut down, and this is still happening today. Around 1.4 billion trees in the rainforest are cut down every year. The trees are cut down because people want to use the land for farming and raising animals.

II Many special kinds of animals live in the Amazon rainforest. For example, the giant otter is an animal that can be found near the Amazon River. Today there are only 2,000-5,000 giant otters left. Another special animal is the gray woolly monkey, which lives in high places in the forest. Today the number of gray woolly monkeys is only half of what it was 50 years ago.

III Researchers have found that because there are fewer trees in the rainforest, there is less rainfall in the forest area and there are higher levels of harmful CO₂ in air. We must stop cutting down trees in the Amazon rainforest and protect this special treasure.
