A Smart Cane for Better Walking

I Many people have trouble walking because of old age or disability. These people’s independence is reduced, and they are at high risk of injuries from falling. One common solution is to use a walking cane*. Recently, an engineer named Ahmad Alghazi invented a smart walking cane called the “CAN Go” cane. Alghazi’s grandmother had walking problems, and he saw how hard her daily life was. As 5 a result, he started to develop the smart cane.

II The CAN Go cane is made from strong, light materials, and it has several smart features. Inside the cane there are sensors that track** the person’s movements. The cane has a SIM card, so it can be used for phone calls instead of a regular phone. It also has an emergency button and GPS. Like a smartphone, the cane gets automatic software updates. Charging the cane is easy: like other devices, 10 the user just plugs it into any electricity socket*** at home.

III Because it is smart, the CAN Go cane can help people with walking problems in special ways. The user can set a walking goal for each day. The sensors in the cane track the number of steps the person takes, and when the goal is reached, a light on the cane turns green. This encourages users of the CAN Go cane to walk more and stay healthy. In addition, the cane can be useful in the case of a fall: 15 the person can push the emergency button and call for help. If the person cannot reach the button, the cane automatically makes the phone call. The GPS in the cane helps emergency services find the person quickly. The GPS is helpful in another way: it allows the user to find the cane if it gets lost.

IV The CAN Go cane is more expensive than a regular cane, and some people may not be able to afford it. Hopefully, in the future, this problem will be solved, and more people will enjoy this special 20 technology.

Wind: A Clean Source of Electricity

I Wind energy is a type of clean energy that comes from wind. In 2022, wind energy provided 10% of the electricity in the United States. Wind energy became popular in the 1990s, compared to solar energy, which became popular earlier, in the 1980s. However, today, wind energy produces more electricity than solar energy. In 2023, wind energy produced 7.5% of the world’s electricity, while 5 solar energy produced 5.5%. Wind energy is cheaper than many other power sources. Since 2009, its cost has gone down by 70%. Today the cost of wind energy is around $\text{textdollar}$30 for every megawatt-hour*, which is cheaper than coal or natural gas.

II Every year in the United States, wind energy reduces the amount of polluting CO2 in the atmosphere by 336 million metric tons. This is the same amount of CO2 that is produced by 73 million cars. Wind 10 energy is also good for employment. Today, around 150,000 people are employed in the wind energy industry in the United States. Experts predict that by 2050, the wind energy industry will create many additional jobs. For all these reasons, wind energy is a smart choice.
