Drones for Delivery

I Today, more and more people shop for products and food online. As a result, companies need to make sure they have quick, cheap delivery systems. However, this is not easy to do. Companies spend a lot of money on drivers’ salaries and on fuel for delivery vehicles. In rural areas, difficult roads make it hard for delivery vehicles to reach their destination, and in cities, heavy traffic means that some deliveries take a long time to reach customers. In addition, delivery vehicles harm the environment because they get their power from polluting fuel.

II Recently, some companies have started using small drones to make deliveries. Drones enable companies to deliver products or food to almost any destination. This is because traffic and poor roads do not slow the drones down or prevent them from reaching customers. Another advantage of drones is that because they fly autonomously, companies do not have to employ drivers. Companies also save money on fuel because drones are powered by electricity. Their electric power also makes drones more environmentally friendly than trucks and vans, which run on fuel.

III There are other important tasks delivery drones can do. They can deliver medical supplies to remote areas that cannot be accessed by truck because of difficult roads and dangerous weather. In addition, in poor countries, many trucks do not have refrigeration, which is a problem for medicines on a very long journey. Another use of delivery drones is for rescue. Drones can find lost people in difficult places and then send pictures and a location to rescue teams.

IV Using drones for delivery has its problems, too, especially in cities. Drones land in busy places, which may cause accidents. In addition, drones make noise, and people are unhappy about having them flying over their houses. Finally, all drones are equipped with sensors and cameras. These may be used to illegally collect private data about people or businesses. Such problems must be solved if we want delivery drones to become more common in the future.

Food Waste

I Every year, 1.6 billion tons of food are wasted globally. This is 25-30% of all the food produced. In rich countries, consumers throw away 95-115 kilograms per person yearly, while for consumers in poor countries, the average is 6-11 kilograms. Retailers such as supermarkets and restaurants also throw away a lot of food. For example, in 2022, 60% of food waste was caused by consumers and 40% by retailers. Food waste harms the environment because it releases 4.85 billion metric tons of polluting greenhouse gases* yearly. For comparison, road transportation releases 6 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases yearly, and airplanes release less than 1 billion tons.

II The UN wants to cut global food waste by 50% by 2030. Although many experts say this goal is too challenging to achieve, we can still try to fight waste. An organization called Too Good To Go runs an application that helps customers buy leftover meals for cheap from restaurants. The application prevents 75 million meals from being wasted yearly. Another organization, called WRAP, consults big companies on how to reduce their food waste. With WRAP’s help, companies save around 19,000 tons of food a year. We should all waste less food.
