PET PARROTS* LEARN SOMETHING NEW

I Parrots are beautiful and clever birds. They usually
live in forests in hot countries. In these forests, they always
live in large groups with lots of other parrots. But when a
parrot is a pet, it usually lives alone in a cage. So pet parrots
5 are often lonely*.
II A group of scientists found a way to help pet parrots
be less lonely. They taught 15 pet parrots to make video calls
to each other. To start a call, a parrot touched the screen of
a computer with its beak. Then it saw another parrot on the
10 screen.
III When the parrots saw each other on their screens, they
made loud noises. They showed each other their toys, and they
sang. It was clear that they did not feel lonely.
IV "There are also other ways to make sure that your pet parrot isn't lonely," says
15 Anna Stern. Anna knows a lot about parrots because she takes care of them in a zoo in
London. "You can play with your parrot and talk to it a lot," she explains. "Or you can
get a second parrot. When you have two parrots, they will never be lonely."
