Food Waste

I Every year, 1.6 billion tons of food are wasted globally. This is 25-30% of all the food produced. In rich countries, consumers throw away 95-115 kilograms per person yearly, while for consumers in poor countries, the average is 6-11 kilograms. Retailers such as supermarkets and restaurants also throw away a lot of food. For example, in 2022, 60% of food waste was caused by consumers and 40% by retailers. Food waste harms the environment because it releases 4.85 billion metric tons of polluting greenhouse gases* yearly. For comparison, road transportation releases 6 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases yearly, and airplanes release less than 1 billion tons.

II The UN wants to cut global food waste by 50% by 2030. Although many experts say this goal is too challenging to achieve, we can still try to fight waste. An organization called Too Good To Go runs an application that helps customers buy leftover meals for cheap from restaurants. The application prevents 75 million meals from being wasted yearly. Another organization, called WRAP, consults big companies on how to reduce their food waste. With WRAP’s help, companies save around 19,000 tons of food a year. We should all waste less food.
