AN EASY WAY TO HELP BLIND PEOPLE
I When Sally Grant goes out, she always takes her dog, Lucky, with her. Sally is almost blind
and Lucky helps her, especially with crossing roads and getting on buses. However, sometimes
Sally needs people to help her. "At the supermarket, I know where everything is," she says, "but
sometimes there is important information on a product that I can't read. For example, I want to
5 know the date on a yogurt but I can't see it."
II Fortunately, Sally now has a wonderful app* on her phone. The name of the app is Be My Eyes
(BME) and it helps people who are blind or almost blind. When she uses this app, it connects her
to a volunteer. She explains her problem and points her phone camera at the information that she
cannot read. Then the volunteer reads it to her.
10 III All over the world, half a million people who are blind or almost blind have the BME app.
Five million volunteers also have the app. The people who made the app say they want blind people
and volunteers to "see the world together." And that is exactly what happens.
