Too Much Fishing

I Overfishing* in oceans is a major problem. Compared to 70 years ago, when humans took less than 20 million tons of fish out of the oceans each year, today the numbers can reach 85 million tons a year. Modern fishing nets are huge: they are eighteen football fields long and have a capacity of 500 tons of fish. Because today’s fishing nets are so big, they also catch a lot of other animals accidentally**. For example, every year, shrimp boats in the Gulf of Mexico accidentally catch 35 million red snapper fish. In the Caspian Sea, for every 1000 kilograms of sturgeon, 75 seals are caught accidentally. Sometimes these animals are returned to the ocean, but many die.

II Because of overfishing, fish populations are at risk. In the Mediterranean Sea, 62% of fish populations may disappear, and in the Black Sea, the same percent are at risk. The decrease in fish numbers has negative effects on human life. In Alaska, 7,000 employees in the fishing industry lost their jobs between 2022-2024. In addition, as fish numbers continue decreasing, less people will be able to eat fish, and they will lose its important health benefits. Overfishing is harmful and must be stopped.
