ARTISTS MAKE SCULPTURES ON A BEACH

I Every year, artists travel from many different countries to a beach in Port Aransas, USA.
They go there for a special competition. In this competition, artists make very large sculptures
from sand. Some of the sculptures look like* animals or interesting buildings. Others look like
famous people. The artist who makes the best sculpture wins 2,000 dollars.
5 II On most beaches in the world, it is not possible to make very large sculptures from sand.
On those beaches, you can make only small sculptures. However, the beach in Port Aransas
is different from most beaches. It has special sand. The artists at the competition need this
special sand to build their large sculptures.
III The first competition in Port Aransas was in 1997. That year, only a few people went to
10 see the sculptures. But now the competition is very popular. Last year, 100,000 visitors
went to look at the sculptures.
IV Kevin Turner, an artist from Canada, was at the competition last year. "I made a sculpture
that looked like a horse," says Turner. "It wasn't a very good sculpture, but I had a lot of fun."
