Read the text below and then answer questions 1–11.

NANIA, THE LOST ELEPHANT

I Boromo is a village in Africa. One hot day in September 2017,
people from Boromo found a sick baby elephant all alone. Because there
were no other elephants nearby, the villagers understood she was lost.
They knew she needed help to stay alive.
5 II The villagers stayed with her 24 hours a day. They built a
fence around the elephant to protect her. The village children named
the elephant Nania. The villagers asked a wildlife organization for
help. The organization sent medicine, money and experts to help save the elephant. These experts taught
four villagers how to be elephant keepers. Elephant keepers are people who take care of elephants.
10 III But an elephant's place is not in a village. An elephant should live in nature. Wildlife expert
Dr. Karen Morrison explained, "Nania should return to nature at some time. But first, she will need to
learn how to live there." So her keepers waited for Nania to become healthy and strong. Then they moved
her to a large national park near Boromo as the first step before she returns to nature.
IV Now Nania's keepers are preparing her for life in nature. They already taught her how to find food
15 and water. They also taught her that she can keep cool in the river. Now they are teaching her about
dangers, like hungry lions. One night an elephant herd passed close by. When Nania heard the elephants,
she called out to them loudly and the other elephants answered. The keepers saw that Nania was very
excited. She showed them that she wanted to be with the other elephants. It means that soon she will be
ready to return to nature.
20 V The wildlife organization used modern scientific methods and succeeded in finding Nania's herd,
including her mother. Everyone hopes that when Nania returns to nature, her herd will welcome her and
that her mother will love her as much as the villagers of Boromo do.
