Cleaning Up Our Oceans

I Plastic is a serious problem for our oceans. Every year, over 11 million tons of plastic enter the oceans, with 80% coming from polluted rivers. In an area called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, there are about 2 trillion pieces of plastic weighing 96,000 tons. In the Indian Ocean, the second most polluted ocean, there are about 1.3 trillion plastic pieces weighing 94,000 tons. Plastic in the ocean 5 causes global losses of up to $\text{textdollar}$19 billion yearly.

II The Ocean Cleanup Project (OCP) is an organization that aims to remove 90% of plastic from the oceans by 2040. The OCP has developed a technology called System 03 for cleaning up the ocean. Every time System 03 is used, it cleans up 10,000 kilograms of plastic. In 2024, 50,000 kilograms of plastic were removed from the North Pacific with the help of System 03. The OCP has developed 10 another system, called the Interceptor, for cleaning up rivers. The OCP has made a list of the 1,000 most polluted rivers in the world. Today the OCP operates Interceptors in eight of the 1,000 rivers on this list. Hopefully, the OCP will continue the important job of cleaning up our oceans.
